Assoc Prof Silas Villas-Boas

Fungi Expert

Silas will be contributing to the BTB program by providing novel natural antimicrobial molecules isolated and characterised in his laboratory from New Zealand fungi, and with his expertise in microbial metabolism and metabolomics to characterise the mechanism of action of biocides towards target cells

Background

Dr Villas-Boas is an Associate Professor at the School of Biological Sciences - his group carries out research on microbial physiology with focus on metabolic mechanisms in living cells. Through a multi-disciplinary approach involving aspects of microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry and engineering, they aim to develop new, cutting edge technologies used to gain insight into the mechanisms governing complex metabolic pathways relevant in industrial fermentation processes, human disease development and in food processes.
